Splendid Bee was born in 2001. After two years and countless instances of trial and error – Splendid Bee developed the current soap formula in 2003 that is still used to this day.
The Splendid Bee Formula
Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil
The EVOO used in Splendid Bee soaps is derived from the first pressing and makes a hard bar of soap that mildly conditions the skin. While it doesn’t lather well on its own – when it is combined with the other oils in the Splendid Bee Formula – it generates a nice, dense lather.
Organic Palm Oil
The palm oil comes from the fleshy part of the fruit produced by the oil palm tree, Elaeis Guinnesis, indigenous to West Guinea. This oil make sa long-lasting bar of soap and adds skin conditioning and cleansing qualities. Molecularly-speaking, it is a plant-based alternative to lard and tallow that is found in other soap formulas.
Organic Palm Kernel Oil
This oil also comes from the oil palm tree, but is harvested from the kernel of the fruit’s core. Palm kernel oil generates a wonderfully fluffy lather and produces a nice, white, clean bar of soap.
Organic Coconut Oil
Coconut oil comes from the seeds of Cocos Nucifera and is primarily cultivated in Southeast Asia. Coconut oil is another super thick lather producer and a cleaning agent.
Organic Cocoa Butter
Cocoa butter is a vegetable fat obtained from cocoa beans from the Theobroma Cacao tree and is one of the most stable fats available. It’s used as a “superfatting” agent in the Splendid Bee Formula as a small amount of extra “free” butter in soap adding skin-loving sources of healthy fatty acids for more moisturizing and less itchy skin. Cocoa butter is also helpful for reducing the appearance of stretch marks, wrinkles, scars, and burn marks as it increases skin elasticity and holds moisture in the skin.
A very small amount of beeswax, also known as Cera Alba or Cera Lava, is used in the Splendid Bee Formula as a replacement for stearic acid. This helps harden the bar of soap, so that it will last longer. However, beeswax also carries antiviral, anti=inflammatory, and antibacterial properties that are essential in fighting chapped skin, as well as bacterial infections, that tend to affect us in the dry, winter months. The beeswax in the Splendid Bee Formula forms a protective wall and seals moisture into our skin without smothering or clogging up pores.
In 2010, Splendid Bee transitioned to using all natural, organic ingredient. This excludes the beeswax, though, which can never be guaranteed/certified organic since bees cannot be contained to a specific geographical area.
*Palm and Palm Kernel Oils are both certified by RSPO – Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil – The RSPO has developed a set of environmental and social criteria which companies must comply with in order to produce Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO). When they are properly applied, these criteria can help to minimize the negative impact of palm oil cultivation on the environment and communities in palm oil-producing regions. For most consumers, this means no negative impact on areas where orangutans live.
All raw materials used in production bear the QAI certification – *Quality Assurance International which provides independent, third-party organic certification to products, internationally, at every stage of processing from farm or forrest to bar of soap.
All applicable raw materials used in production from the United States are *USDA Certified Organic.
All applicable raw materials used in production are *Non-GMO Project Verified, North America’s most trusted third-party verification for non-GMO food and products.
All applicable raw materials used in production are *Rainforest Alliance Certified – this green frog certification seal indicates that a farm, forest, or tourism enterprise has been audited to meet standards that require environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
